On October 13th, R&H/COLAS CONSTRUCTION broke ground on the newest addition to Portland Community College; the Newberg Center. A crowd of college dignitaries, governmental officials, the project team and local area residents gathered to celebrate the monumental groundbreaking of the Center that will extend PCC's services to the Yamhill County area.
When complete, the facility will feature approximately 12,000 s.f. including classrooms, a conference room, administrative space and a reception area. Designed by Henneberry Eddy Architects as a Net-Zero Ready Building, the Newberg Campus aims to produce as much energy as it uses. A 7,000 s.f. rooftop photovoltaic array will convert solar energy into electricity and serve as a cover for a large outdoor plaza area. Additional sustainable elements include extensive use of natural daylighting, an airtight building envelope design and a natural ventilation system for the classrooms and common areas.
During construction, R&H/Colas will focus on creating opportunities for the local, Newberg area residents and D/M/W/ESB contracting firms. The facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2011.
